Treat the curtain as a system
A curtain is fabric, heading, lining, hem, fullness, track, carrier, bracket, control and coordinated building support. In hospitality environments it may screen a VIP space, moderate daylight, conceal an opening, improve acoustic comfort or allow a room to change configuration. Each function produces different technical requirements.
Begin with the opening dimensions, mounting substrate, stack location, operating frequency, user reach, required privacy, daylight and blackout performance, acoustic intent, air movement, cleaning access and fire-safety strategy. Confirm whether the treatment sits near sprinklers, detectors, air grilles, heaters, floor outlets, doors or egress paths.

Fabric selection
Assess composition, mass, width, pattern repeat, colourfastness, light exposure, dimensional stability, snag resistance, cleanability and expected lifetime. A wide-width textile can reduce vertical seams. Natural-looking textures may be engineered from different fibres; specify the performance outcome rather than assuming composition from appearance.
Fire-performance documentation
Requirements vary with application and approval pathway. Obtain evidence for the exact textile, treatment and proposed use, and have it reviewed by the project’s qualified fire and building professionals. If a treatment provides performance, establish durability after cleaning and the process for re-treatment.
Workroom standards
Issue a make-up schedule defining fullness, heading, seams, pattern matching, side hems, weights, lining attachment, labels and acceptable finished length. Approve a representative sample drop or first finished curtain. State whether natural pooling is intended; in operational areas a controlled clearance is normally easier to keep clean.
Tracks and motorisation
Size tracks and fixings for the finished curtain weight plus operating loads. Curves, long spans and heavy acoustic fabrics need specialist review. For powered tracks, document motor location, power and control interface, limit setting, manual override, noise expectations and access for replacement. Coordinate recesses and supports before ceilings close.
A hidden track is only successful when its carriers, motor and fixings remain accessible.
Supplier checklist
- Arrange site measure after relevant construction dimensions are stable.
- Request large samples and view front and back under day and night conditions.
- Confirm test reports, batch variation, availability and reserve fabric.
- Review track layout, structural support, stacking, overlap and maintenance access.
- Prototype the most complex bay, including control and hem clearance.
- Agree cleaning method, take-down responsibility, labelling, spares and warranty response.
Care and replacement
Provide a documented inspection and cleaning cycle. Vacuuming, spot treatment, on-site extraction, dry cleaning or removal may be appropriate depending on the textile and construction. Panels should be permanently labelled by location and orientation so they return to the correct bay. Retain spare fabric from the production batch for local damage, and protect it from light, moisture and pests.
