Build a hierarchy of light
Casino hospitality lighting is not one uniform lux level. Entry thresholds, circulation, lounge settings, service points, amenities, displays, artwork, cleaning and emergency conditions each need a deliberate response. The strongest schemes establish a visual hierarchy: low-glare ambient light for orientation, focal light for landmarks, decorative elements for identity and sufficient task light where staff work.
Start with a room-by-room narrative and operating scenes. Record the intended mood, target illuminance where required, vertical illumination, uniformity, colour appearance, glare control, mounting constraints, integration details and control behaviour. Validate the design through calculation and physical mock-up, especially around reflective metals, screens and dark finishes.

Light quality and equipment
Colour and consistency
Specify correlated colour temperature together with colour rendering criteria appropriate to skin, artwork, timber and food. Request chromaticity consistency data for large batches and a replacement policy that addresses visible variation over time. Warm-dim systems require a defined dimming curve and demonstration.
Glare and reflection
Bright sources reflected in polished stone, glass, screens or metal can undermine an otherwise successful layout. Review luminaire shielding, cut-off, viewing angles and reflected images from normal seated and standing positions. A rendered image rarely reveals these problems; mock-ups do.
Drivers, dimming and controls
Confirm driver compatibility, minimum stable dimming level, flicker performance, control protocol, addressing, network ownership and what happens after power loss. Document scenes for opening, normal operation, late operation, cleaning, maintenance and emergency interface. Locate equipment where it can be accessed without damaging finishes or closing a major area.
Australian coordination
Electrical work and products must be assessed against current Australian legal and technical requirements by qualified parties. The project team should consider applicable National Construction Code provisions, relevant Australian Standards, state or territory electrical safety rules, emergency lighting, energy efficiency, accessibility and the specific certification pathway. Supplier claims should be supported by documents applicable to the exact product and configuration offered.
A decorative pendant is also a structure, an electrical assembly, a maintenance task and an object below which people move.

Questions for a lighting tender
- Are photometric files, technical data, declarations and warranty terms supplied for the exact configuration?
- Are colour, optics, accessories, drivers and control components unambiguously scheduled?
- Can high-risk details be demonstrated in a full-scale mock-up?
- Who completes aiming, programming, testing, commissioning and scene sign-off?
- What are the rated lives and replacement paths for sources, drivers, controls and custom diffusers?
- How will future technicians access equipment and obtain the final settings?
Commissioning and care
Allow time after furniture, art and finishes are installed for final aiming and scene setting. Handover should include as-built addresses, schedules, passwords or licences controlled by the owner, scene descriptions, test results, spare components and cleaning guidance. Consider how dust affects output and appearance, and whether a decorative fitting can be safely lowered or reached.
